As the concept of having a hub worked out very well with Buenos Aires, I did it again with Santiago de Chile. Over four weeks, I was flying in and out. My trips from here have been to Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Valparaiso, and Patagonia. As I was always returning to the same hotel, it was easy to leave my luggage there only to take what I needed. 

While in Santiago, I relaxed, did work out, and explored the city. The city is big, but not exciting. During my first visit, the Pan American Games were in the town. Therefore, a lot of life has been on the streets. So, for sure, I walked around to see some historical landmarks. I booked a historical city walking tour, but it was canceled as I was the only one who booked it… It could be a sign that even tourists are not interested in that. 

One day, I did a hike into the “Parque Metropolitano de Santiago,” a massive hill in the middle of the city with many walking paths, trails, forests, and a church on top of it. It was a lovely sunny Sunday, and I enjoyed the silence away from the city. I also saw the city from the top last time before leaving.

As this is my last post on Chile, here are some words about the local food: Besides everything I have seen in South America, Chile did not put many additional surprises on the table. 

Some things nevertheless I want to mention:

  • A bigger version of the lovely Argentinian empanada
  • A drink called “Mote con Cursillo”, a peach with white corn in iced tea. Very sweet but also delicious. 
  • A dinner dish, “Pastel de choclo”, made from sweetcorn. The filling usually contains ground beef, chicken, raisins, black olives, onions, or slices of hard-boiled egg. I had the beef version 🙂
  • Red velvet cake

And with that, I am leaving South America for Asia. I am excited about what’s next…
