Budapest was founded out of two cities, Buda and Pest.

I had four days to see both of them. Which is the best, so a clear recommendation, have enough time to visit Budapest.

But starting from the beginning, some important facts:

  • You don’t need cash; you can pay with a credit card everywhere in Budapest.
  • Download the BOLD app for taxis, convenient like Uber, with good prices.
  • A boat tour is worth taking. Sure, you are only shipping 30min on the Donau in one direction and back in the other, but you can see amazing buildings, esp. the parliament, at a full glance.

The history

The history of Budapest is sad and horrible. Many memorials and places to get more info about the past are located across Budapest.

3 of them I want to mention

  • The atomic bunker hospital: Take the tour of more than an hour to walk almost 1km into the mountain to see how during various conflicts, a hospital and the crew helped soldiers from both sides
  • The Place of Heroes
  • The shoes on the Danube Bank: a memorial to honour the Jews who were massacred. They were ordered to take off their shoes and shoot at the water’s edge.

The Architecture

What impressed me the most was the amazing architecture in Budapest. A lot of old buildings, a lot of have been museums or city buildings or even embassies. But also normal buildings are sometimes just beautiful. So take your time to walk around and have a look.

Getting up to the museum

Taking the historical “Buda Castle Funicular” to the top of all the museums is worth it, even if you don’t wanna visit the current exhibition. First of all, you have an amazing view, on the other hand, you can walk around in amazing buildings. On top, you can see the guard change.

Up the hill

Up to the Gellért Hill is an easy walk for sporty people.
You will get to see an amazing view across the city.

Unfortunately, the statue on top (Liberty Statue) was fenced due to construction….

And last but not least, as always, my food posts 🙂

  1. The “Esterházy torta” a local specialty with hazelnuts and not as much sugar as it looks 🙂
  2. Hungarian Rataouile with sausage
  3. Cold Raspberry Soup
  4. Langos
  5. Chicken on peas
  6. Breakfast
  7. Typical Meat plate at an hungarian restaurant
  8. “Topfenknödel” with tons of powder sugar
  9. Kürtöskaöács (Chimney Cake filled with Icecream (and Oreos), in German it would be “Baumkuchen”)
  10. Coconut Cinnamon Roll
