… I am just traveling for Food. Vietnamese Food was already one of my favorites at home, so I was not surprised to live the good life in Vietnam. The only thing I don’t get is their obsession with Coriander – the soapish green leaves… disgusting… Besides drinking a lot of coffee in Vietnam, I will show you my favorite dishes.
Mango Bingsu
I found a cafe in Hoi An called “Hội An Toto Bingsu & Cafe”. For sure, I had to test it if they already named it after me 🙂
Their dish is the “Mango Bingsu”. I found out later that it’s Korean, but as I have seen it for the first time in Vietnam, I will put it on the positive site here. Mango Bingsu (sometimes called mango bingsoo) is a delicious and refreshing Korean shaved ice dessert. The base of the dish is a fluffy, snow-like shaved ice made from milk, giving it a creamy, subtly sweet flavor. Then, they add a fresh mango and some mango puree. In the middle, a scoop of vanilla ice cream and some toppings. In my case, mini marshmallows.

Bánh xèo
Also known as Vietnamese pancakes or crepe are just fabulous. I would say it is my favorite dish I had. Bánh xèo is a crispy, stuffed rice pancake. The name refers to the sound a thin layer of rice batter makes when it is poured into the hot skillet. It is a savory fried pancake made of rice flour, water, and turmeric powder. You can get them filled with shrimp, beef, or pork. How you eat them is different from area to area. Sometimes, you eat them without anything else; in Hanoi, you put them together with salad and mango into a rise paper, roll them, and eat them like a summer roll.

Chè Thái
A common desert in the area of Hue. Several fruits, like mango, sweet potato, or nuts like almonds or peanuts, are either smashed or, as a whole, sometimes in coconut milk or condensed milk; some of them are hot, some of them are cold, and some are waiting for you. You can put them in a small single bowl to have one taste after the other, or you can get them in layers into a bigger class filled with milk and ice cubes. I actually really liked it 🙂

Bánh bao
It’s a version of a German “Dampfnudel”. Bánh bao is a Vietnamese bun. It is a ball-shaped bun containing pork or chicken meat, onions, eggs, mushrooms, and vegetables. It often has Chinese sausage and a portion of a hard-boiled egg inside. I tested the one with the hard-boiled egg (in my case, it was a quail egg). I didn’t like it, especially the weird feeling if you get by accident that small egg into your mouth and while biting it “poops” in your mouth :/
The more fantastic version was the one filled with chocolate sauce. Unfortunately, a photo is missing as I was always faster eating them 🙂
Bánh gối
A.k.a., Pillow cake or, for me, the Vietnamese version of my beloved empanada. It is a typical street food filled with pork or beef, some vegetables, and spices.

If you go out for dinner, you always order more than one thing, more like tapas. That is why a dinner for two might look like this:

Some lettuce, some sauces (peanut butter sauce is my fav), the pancakes, spring rolls, summer rolls, and that’s it. Easy, fast, and tasty.
I tested many more things; some have been disgusting, even without Coriander. .
