I had the chance to stay four weeks on Mauritius, a unique experience in a fantastic country, nevertheless, with some downsides I have to explain πŸ™‚

I lived for 1 1/2 weeks in Flic en Flac, in the northwestern part of the island, and the rest at Grand Baie, the northeastern region.
But let’s start from the beginning with the first blog post:

Transportation
I decided not to get a rental car, which was fine as I got a bike at Grand Baie, rented a scooter when needed, and took the bus or a cab for longer distances if required. The buses are cheap, but finding out when a bus is leaving at which station is sometimes an adventure as the stops do not have names printed on a sign or something like this. You must guess which bus stop is meant if you use the website https://www.mauritius-buses.com/ to find the right bus. You also need to know that with a lot of luggage, it’s possible, but a hassle if the bus is crowded. Walking on the streets, by the way, is a nightmare! It seems they have never heard about a fabulous feature called “sidewalk” πŸ™‚

Flic en Flac

Flice-en-Flac is a well-known diving spot, but as I am not into diving, I just relaxed at the beautiful beach for the first two days.

On the third day, I wanted to see the essential spots in the western part of Mauritius. I thought about different options, but the best and cheapest one (30$) was to hire a cab driver for five hours to drive me around to all needed spots: nature, seven colored earth, Chamarel waterfall, and Grand Bassin temple.

The beautiful nature

Seven Colored Earth
The seven Colored Earths are a geological formation and prominent tourist attraction found in the Chamarel plain of the Rivière Noire District in south-western Mauritius. (have a look)

Grand Bassin Temple

Caselas Park

Close to Flic-en-Flac, Mauritius has a gated animal park. Besides the “normal animals”, my primary intention was to see tigers, lions, and especially the with tigers. Sure, they are not initially from Mauritius, but they help to save the animals within these large areas. You can book a typical game drive which is kind of nice, but I recommend hiring the “walking ranger”-tour in addition. A ranger will take you for a walk behind the scenes of the big cat area; you will be close to the lions and get a lot of information about their life, only for 10$ more…

Food

At Flic en Flac I had the first time creole food. Delicisous and special. The main dish was the “private part” of the red coral trout, an impressive big redfish. Pretty delicious. Creole food is generally a mix of fresh seafood with some Indian influences.

After 1 1/2 weeks, I took the bus to Grand Baie. This happens via Port Louis (the capital of Mauritius). It was the cheapest way, and two hours via bus to cross the island is an excellent time to see a lot πŸ™‚

And for Grand Baie, have a look into my second post πŸ™‚
