Driving by car to Sardinia from Germany sounds in the beginning like a stupid idea, especially as the ferry is costly. But as it’s worth exploring the whole island, a car is really beneficial.

Grimaldi Lines had possible options for us from and to Italy: Next to Rome (Civitavecchia), Livorno, and Genua. The most expensive one is Genua (even if it’s the fastest way), the cheapest next to Rome. We decided to leave Italy from Rome and come back to Livorno. First, we planned to only have a cabin on the way into our vacation, and on the way back, we just planned to sleep somewhere on the boat. On our trip to Sardinia, we decided to upgrade: People are doing a party on the deck, music is everywhere, and if you need some sleep during the 7h ship, it’s almost impossible to find. So we also upgraded our way back. In total, one direction is about 600 Dollars (not in high season) for two adults in one cabin and one car without a trailer. Not the cheapest but at least a relaxing option 🙂

The primary purpose of this vacation was “beaching”, laying in the sun, getting tanned, and having good food. And definitely: we achieved that by 101% 🙂

We drove around the whole island and had several stops along the way. After arrival in Obila, the first stop was a small hotel in “Cala Gonone”. From there, we went to Portoscuso to stay in a wellness hotel and Bosa in the west of Sardinia for good food and Crossfit. The last stop was the top north city Palau with the beautiful island “La Maddalena”.

With our first stop in Cala Gonone we found a small hotel close to the waterfront. The beaches have been smaller, but as a start, it was perfect. Hygge the Dansk would say 🙂
It’s possible to take some day trips to beaches, which are crowded and rocky, but the water is crystal clear! We did not book a day trip; we bought a “day card” for a local ship company, and they are driving around to all beaches like a bus. This means we got dropped at one beach, and an hour later, we got picked up again and dropped at the next one.

On our way from Portoscsuo to Boza, I had the idea to visit a historical mine in the middle of the island: Minieria di Su Zurfuru. It was a hell of a ride (narrow streets and a lot of ups and downs, and the mine was not really worth it. At least the nature was impressive 🙂

Arriving in Boza, we found a lot of small streets, lovely old houses, and the best food on Sardinia. The beaches are “rocky” and not as beautiful as on our next stop.

If you are in Boza, you could also drive to Alghero, a more prominent (very tourist) city, to do some sport and shopping.

In Palau, we had a hotel with a top view across the whole area; this was amazing <3.

From Palau, we decided to be active. Near Palau, you can explore a volcanic island by bike (I recommend electric support). Going via ferry to La Maddalena, you can rent a bike and cycle via a bridge to the island of “Capreara”. Amazing small beaches to explore and fantastic nature.

You can book day trips from Palau to the islands, for example, the famous pink beach: Spiaggia Rosa. Actually, the pink is not that pink 🙂

One guy on our boat had a drone with him, therefore some fantastic pictures and videos to show a) the beautiful water and b) that we have not been alone :/
