Arriving in Merzouga was like diving into a new world! As you remember, I visited the Atacama Desert on my world trip, but that was a mix of rocks and sand. It was rare to see only sand. The Sahara is something different.
I stayed at a hotel right on the edge of the biggest hot desert in the world (the biggest desert overall is Antarctica, but obviously, that’s a cold desert). Sand is everywhere—very impressive. It feels so easy to get lost in the endless dunes… I would never go into the desert without a guide (or a good GPS system).

One day, I rented a dune buggy to drive around the Sahara. For sure, I went with a guide who knew how and where to drive… It was so much fun, even if it was expensive (120 €/hour).

What else can you do at the edge of the Sahara? You can change your mode of transport: ATV, camel, off-road car, or on foot. I chose a camel, but just briefly to get to the next peak to watch the sunrise… it sounds better than it actually is!

However, the night is stunning. Due to the lack of lights in the middle of nowhere, you can see the Milky Way as clearly as possible. That’s awesome. I still have a stiff neck from looking up the whole night!
Was it worth visiting? Yes! Would I stay more than 3 days? Rather not 🙂
After 3 nights, I went back into my little car for my last stop in Morocco.
